Valethamate Bromide 10mg is an antispasmodic for pain caused by smooth-muscle spasm, including selected gastrointestinal, urinary and menstrual cramps. It is different from a skeletal-muscle relaxant used for a strained back or neck.
How to use
Swallow the tablet with water at regular times during the treatment course. It may be taken with or without food; a meal can reduce stomach discomfort. Do not increase the dose for unexplained or worsening abdominal pain.
How it works
Valethamate blocks muscarinic effects of acetylcholine on smooth muscle. Reducing these contractions helps ease spasm-related cramping.
Side effects
Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, flushing, fast heartbeat and difficulty passing urine can occur. Severe eye pain, urinary retention or persistent rapid heartbeat needs prompt assessment.
Important information
Narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary obstruction, bowel obstruction, myasthenia gravis and tachyarrhythmias can make anticholinergic treatment unsuitable. Other anticholinergic medicines can worsen dry mouth, constipation or urine retention. Reduced sweating can increase heat intolerance.

Benefits
Can reduce cramping when smooth-muscle contraction is the cause of pain. It does not treat the underlying cause of an infection, obstruction or other acute abdominal condition.
Is this useful for a muscle strain in the arm or back?
It acts mainly on smooth muscle in internal organs, not on the skeletal-muscle spasm associated with a typical strain.
Why can urination become more difficult?
Anticholinergic action can reduce bladder contraction. People with an obstructed bladder outlet are more likely to develop urinary retention.
Can it worsen glaucoma symptoms?
It can trigger problems in narrow-angle glaucoma. Sudden painful red eye, blurred vision or coloured halos needs urgent assessment.
Should persistent abdominal pain simply be treated with more tablets?
No. Fever, repeated vomiting, abdominal swelling, blood in stool or steadily worsening pain can indicate a cause that needs assessment rather than additional spasm suppression.
