Amikacin 750mg/3mL is an injectable aminoglycoside antibiotic used for serious bacterial infections when the likely or confirmed organism is susceptible. It may be used for severe infections involving the urinary tract, lungs, bloodstream, bones, joints, abdomen, or other sites, depending on culture results and the prescriber's plan. Amikacin does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu, and unnecessary use increases antibiotic resistance risk. This medicine requires careful dosing because aminoglycosides can affect the kidneys, hearing, balance, nerves, and breathing muscles.

How to use

Amikacin 750mg/3mL is given by a healthcare professional as an IV infusion or intramuscular injection. Use the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Hydration, kidney-function monitoring, and drug-level monitoring may be needed. Do not skip doses or use leftover antibiotics.

How it works

Amikacin binds to bacterial ribosomes and disrupts protein production, leading to bacterial cell death. It is active against selected gram-negative and other susceptible bacteria, but only when the organism is sensitive to amikacin.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include injection-site pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, fever, headache, or abnormal kidney tests. Serious risks include kidney injury, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, balance problems, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, breathing difficulty, severe allergy, or severe diarrhoea.

Important information

Use caution in kidney disease, dehydration, older age, hearing or balance disorders, neuromuscular disease, pregnancy, and concurrent nephrotoxic or ototoxic medicines such as vancomycin, amphotericin B, cisplatin, loop diuretics, or other aminoglycosides. Report tinnitus, hearing change, dizziness, reduced urine, or weakness immediately.
