Esomeprazole 40mg Gastro-resistant Tablets

Esomeprazole 40mg is a proton pump inhibitor used for acid-related conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and selected stomach or duodenal ulcers. It provides sustained acid suppression that supports healing of acid-damaged tissue.
Swallow the gastro-resistant tablet whole with water, preferably one hour before a meal. Do not chew or crush it because the coating protects the medicine from stomach acid. For twice-daily treatment, doses are generally taken before the morning and evening meals.
Esomeprazole blocks the H+/K+ ATPase proton pump in stomach parietal cells. This suppresses the final step in acid secretion, whether acid release is stimulated by food or other signals.
Headache, abdominal discomfort, nausea, gas, diarrhoea or constipation can occur. Persistent watery diarrhoea, reduced urine, severe rash or symptoms of low magnesium need assessment.
Difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, black stools or vomiting blood should not be masked by repeated acid treatment. Tell your doctor about liver disease, osteoporosis, low magnesium and use of clopidogrel, warfarin, digoxin or methotrexate. Longer courses may require nutritional and bone-health monitoring.
Can relieve recurring acid-related heartburn and help oesophageal or ulcerated tissue heal. In Helicobacter pylori treatment it supports, but does not replace, the required antibiotics.
No. It reduces new acid production rather than neutralising acid already present. Full symptom control can take several days of regular treatment.
No. Eradication requires an appropriate antibiotic combination. Acid suppression improves the treatment environment but is not itself an antibiotic.
Temporary rebound acid secretion can occur. A planned reduction or other symptom-management strategy may be needed rather than repeatedly restarting treatment without reassessment.
Long-term acid suppression can contribute to low magnesium and vitamin B12 deficiency, and may be associated with fracture risk in susceptible people. The relevance depends on treatment duration and other risk factors.
Esomeprazole can reduce formation of clopidogrel's active metabolite. When antiplatelet treatment is needed, an alternative acid-suppression strategy may be chosen to avoid this interaction.
