Valethamate Bromide 8mg/mL Injection

Valethamate Bromide 8mg/mL is an injectable antispasmodic for selected painful smooth-muscle spasms. It is also used in monitored obstetric care to assist cervical relaxation during labour, rather than as a self-administered labour-induction medicine.
A doctor or nurse gives the injection into a muscle or slowly into a vein, according to the clinical setting. Heart rate and anticholinergic effects are monitored. In labour it is given within a maternity-care plan, not outside monitored obstetric care.
Valethamate blocks muscarinic effects of acetylcholine on smooth muscle. Reducing these contractions helps ease spasm-related cramping.
Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, flushing, fast heartbeat and difficulty passing urine can occur. Severe eye pain, urinary retention or persistent rapid heartbeat needs prompt assessment.
Narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary obstruction, bowel obstruction, myasthenia gravis and tachyarrhythmias can make anticholinergic treatment unsuitable. Other anticholinergic medicines can worsen dry mouth, constipation or urine retention. Reduced sweating can increase heat intolerance.
Provides an injectable option for relief of smooth-muscle spasm when oral treatment is unsuitable. Obstetric use targets cervical spasm and does not replace assessment of labour progress or fetal wellbeing.
No. It is used for smooth-muscle or cervical relaxation within monitored care. It is not a replacement for medicines or procedures used to initiate or augment labour.
Its anticholinergic effect can increase the heart rate. Palpitations or a significant persistent rise in pulse need assessment.
Its main action is on smooth muscle in internal organs, not the skeletal-muscle spasm of a typical back strain.
Anticholinergic effects can precipitate an acute rise in eye pressure. Severe eye pain or new visual disturbance after treatment needs urgent assessment.
