Penicillamine 250mg is a chelating medicine used in Wilson's disease and cystinuria. It is also used in selected severe rheumatoid arthritis cases, where its disease-modifying action can reduce inflammatory disease activity.
How to use
Take on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after food. Keep it separate from milk, iron, zinc, antacids and other medicines that interfere with absorption. Regular blood counts and urine protein testing are essential during treatment.
How it works
Penicillamine binds copper so it can be excreted in urine. In cystinuria it forms a more soluble compound with cystine, reducing stone formation; its anti-rheumatic action involves immune effects.
Side effects
Nausea, altered taste, rash and mouth ulcers may occur. Fever, sore throat, unusual bruising, swelling, breathlessness or reduced urine output can signal serious blood, kidney or immune adverse effects.
Important information
Previous serious penicillamine reactions and kidney or blood disorders materially affect suitability. Pyridoxine supplementation may be needed during some regimens. Monitoring continues even after an initially well-tolerated period because delayed toxicity can occur.

Is Penicillamine 250mg a penicillin antibiotic?
No. Despite the similar name, penicillamine is a chelator and disease-modifying medicine, not an antibacterial penicillin.
Why are urine tests needed?
Protein in urine can be an early sign of kidney injury during treatment, sometimes before swelling becomes apparent.
Can zinc be taken at the same time?
Zinc and other minerals can interfere with absorption; separate administration is important when both are part of treatment.
Why may vitamin B6 be added?
Penicillamine can increase pyridoxine requirements, so supplementation is used in some treatment regimens.
Can Wilson's disease treatment stop when symptoms improve?
Copper accumulation can recur. Long-term disease management is different from treating a short infection course.
