Product Introduction

Drotaverine 80mg is an antispasmodic used to ease painful smooth-muscle spasm in the digestive, biliary and urinary tracts, and menstrual cramps. It targets colicky cramping rather than the skeletal-muscle spasm associated with a strained back. Relief of spasm does not remove an underlying stone, infection or other cause of abdominal pain.

How to use

Take the tablet by mouth with water at the scheduled times; it can be taken with or without food. The required dose and spacing depend on the site and severity of the spasm. Do not continue increasing doses when abdominal pain persists or changes in character.

How it works

Drotaverine inhibits phosphodiesterase activity, particularly PDE4, increasing cyclic AMP in smooth-muscle cells. This reduces their contraction and helps relax spasms without relying on an anticholinergic mechanism.

Side effects

Nausea, constipation, headache, dizziness, palpitations and low blood pressure can occur. Fainting, a severe allergic reaction or a markedly abnormal heartbeat requires urgent attention.

Important information

Tell your doctor about low blood pressure or severe heart, liver or kidney disease. Drotaverine can reduce levodopa's effect and worsen stiffness or tremor in Parkinson's disease. Fever, repeated vomiting, blood in stools or severe localised abdominal pain should not be masked with repeated antispasmodic doses. Mention pregnancy and breastfeeding before treatment.
