Dexlansoprazole 30mg is a dual delayed-release proton pump inhibitor used for reflux-related heartburn and erosive oesophagitis. Its two granule populations release medicine at different stages of intestinal transit, supporting acid control over an extended period. Dexlansoprazole and lansoprazole are distinct active ingredients, not alternative spellings of the same API.
How to use
Swallow the delayed-release capsule whole with water once daily, with or without food. Keep a consistent daily time. Do not crush or chew the capsule contents, because the granule coatings control release. A change from another PPI requires selection of an appropriate regimen rather than a milligram-for-milligram substitution.
How it works
Dexlansoprazole blocks H+/K+-ATPase proton pumps in stomach parietal cells. The dual delayed-release system produces two periods of drug release while the active ingredient suppresses acid secretion.
Side effects
Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, wind and headache can occur. Persistent watery diarrhoea, reduced urine output, severe rash, or muscle cramps with an abnormal heartbeat needs assessment.
Important information
Tell your doctor about liver disease, low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, osteoporosis, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Rilpivirine and some other medicines requiring stomach acid for absorption can interact, as can high-dose methotrexate. Trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss or gastrointestinal bleeding should not be treated as ordinary reflux.

What is different about the dual delayed-release capsule?
It contains granules that release at different pH levels, giving two release phases. This differs from simply using a higher dose of an ordinary immediate-release medicine.
Must Dexlansoprazole 30mg be taken before breakfast?
Dexlansoprazole can be taken without regard to meals. This instruction is formulation-specific and should not be transferred automatically to lansoprazole or other PPIs.
Are 30mg and 60mg used for exactly the same treatment phase?
The 60mg strength is commonly used during healing of erosive oesophagitis, while 30mg is commonly used for maintenance or symptomatic non-erosive GERD. The diagnosis and treatment phase determine the regimen.
Can I use an extra capsule for an isolated heartburn attack?
An extra PPI capsule is not a rapid rescue antacid. Frequent breakthrough symptoms need assessment of timing, adherence and the diagnosis rather than repeated unscheduled doses.
