Product Introduction

Atracurium Besylate 100mg/10ml is an injectable non-depolarising neuromuscular blocker used during anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation. It produces skeletal-muscle relaxation so an anaesthetist can facilitate tracheal intubation, surgical access, or controlled ventilation in an operating-room or intensive-care setting. Atracurium has no pain-relieving, sedative, or unconsciousness-producing effect, so it must only be used with appropriate anaesthesia or sedation and ventilatory support.

How to use

Atracurium Besylate 100mg/10ml is given intravenously by an anaesthesia or critical-care professional. Airway equipment, oxygen, ventilation support, and monitoring must be available before administration. It should never be given to an awake, unsupported patient because it can stop voluntary breathing while consciousness remains possible if anaesthesia is inadequate.

How it works

Atracurium blocks acetylcholine at nicotinic receptors on skeletal muscle, preventing nerve impulses from triggering muscle contraction. This creates temporary paralysis of skeletal muscles, including breathing muscles, until the drug effect wears off or is reversed as prescribed.

Common side effects

Possible effects include flushing, skin redness, low blood pressure, fast heart rate, wheezing or bronchospasm, injection-site reactions, and prolonged weakness. Serious concerns include severe allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, inadequate ventilation, prolonged paralysis, awareness risk if used without adequate anaesthesia, and cardiovascular instability.

Important information

Use only in facilities able to provide airway management and ventilation. Extra caution is needed in asthma, severe allergy history, myasthenia gravis, neuromuscular disease, electrolyte imbalance, burns, hypothermia, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and use of aminoglycosides, magnesium, lithium, local anaesthetics, or volatile anaesthetics. It should not be confused with pain or sedation medicines.
