Nystatin 500000IU Tablets are an oral polyene antifungal used for Candida infection of the gastrointestinal lining outside the oesophagus. The swallowed tablet acts locally in the gut with minimal absorption into the bloodstream.
How to use
Swallow the tablets with water. Treatment generally continues for at least 48 hours after clinical recovery to reduce the risk of recurrence.
How it works
Nystatin binds ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, disrupting Candida cell integrity and stopping fungal growth locally in the gut.
Side effects
Possible effects include nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and unpleasant taste. Serious concerns include allergic rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or persistent/worsening infection symptoms.
Important information
Tell your doctor about immune suppression, diabetes, recent antibiotics, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Persistent or worsening gastrointestinal symptoms need reassessment because causes other than Candida may require different treatment.

Should I keep a swallowed nystatin tablet in my mouth?
No. Swallow this tablet presentation; a suspension or lozenge uses a different administration method.
Can it treat every episode of diarrhoea after antibiotics?
No. Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea has several causes, including C. difficile infection, and nystatin does not treat those causes. Severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea needs assessment rather than automatic antifungal treatment.
