Metronidazole 2% w/w Gel is a topical metronidazole preparation used to manage inflammatory facial lesions of rosacea and selected local skin infections. It helps reduce inflammatory bumps and associated redness; rosacea is different from ordinary acne or a fungal rash.
How to use
Clean the affected skin gently and pat dry before applying a thin layer. Wash hands afterwards unless the hands are the treatment site. Keep the gel away from eyes and do not use it inside the mouth or vagina as a substitute for a route-specific formulation.
How it works
Metronidazole has local anti-inflammatory effects relevant to rosacea, although the precise mechanism is not fully understood. In susceptible anaerobic organisms, reactive metabolites damage microbial DNA and inhibit growth.
Side effects
Local burning, stinging, dryness, redness or irritation may occur. Marked swelling, a severe rash or worsening skin pain requires assessment.
Important information
Previous nitroimidazole allergy, blood disorders and peripheral neuropathy are important to disclose. Minimise strong sunlight on treated skin and use gentle, non-irritating skincare. Worsening redness with fever or spreading infection needs assessment rather than thicker application.

Is Metronidazole 2% w/w interchangeable with vaginal gel?
No. Skin and vaginal products differ in formulation, route and administration and should not be substituted.
Can it be used as a dental gel?
This external skin product is not the same as a dental metronidazole formulation.
Can it treat blackheads and ordinary hormonal acne?
Its main facial role is in rosacea-related inflammation. Blackheads and typical acne can require a different treatment approach.
Can it treat a fungal ringworm rash?
No. Metronidazole is not a ringworm antifungal, and using it for the wrong type of rash can delay effective treatment.
Will a thicker layer work faster?
Additional gel can increase irritation without ensuring better treatment of the inflammatory lesions.
