Methotrexate 1% w/w Gel is a topical methotrexate formulation used for selected resistant psoriasis lesions. It targets excessive skin-cell proliferation and local inflammatory activity and is distinct from systemic methotrexate tablets or injections.
How to use
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry affected skin and wash hands afterwards unless the hands are being treated. Keep away from eyes and mucosal surfaces. Do not cover with an airtight dressing or apply over large or damaged areas unless this is part of the dermatology treatment plan.
How it works
Methotrexate interferes with folate-dependent pathways involved in cell proliferation. Local delivery can reduce the excessive keratinocyte activity associated with psoriatic plaques.
Side effects
Local irritation, redness, burning or rash may occur. Severe irritation, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising or systemic illness during extensive use needs assessment rather than continued application.
Important information
Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Kidney or liver disease and other methotrexate treatment are important to disclose. Topical application does not justify unlimited surface-area exposure or substitution for an oral weekly regimen.

No. Topical and systemic regimens differ, so an oral methotrexate schedule must not be transferred to skin application.
Does a thicker layer work faster?
It can increase irritation and absorption without establishing better psoriasis control.
Can the treated area be covered tightly?
Occlusion can increase absorption and irritation and should not be added independently.
Is a topical product safe during pregnancy?
Not automatically. Methotrexate has fetal-toxicity concerns even though this presentation is applied to the skin.
