Product Introduction

Allopurinol 300mg is an oral xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to lower uric acid over time. Allopurinol is not a fast painkiller for an active gout flare. In fact, gout attacks can temporarily become more frequent when uric acid levels start changing, so clinicians may prescribe colchicine or an anti-inflammatory medicine during initiation. Consistent daily use is important because benefit may take months.

How to use

Take Allopurinol 300mg exactly as prescribed, usually after food with water. Take it at the same time each day. Drink enough fluids unless a clinician has restricted fluids. Do not stop suddenly during a gout flare unless your doctor tells you to; stopping and restarting can destabilize uric acid control. Dose changes should be guided by uric acid and kidney-function monitoring.

How it works

Allopurinol blocks xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in uric acid production. Lower uric acid levels help existing urate crystals dissolve gradually and reduce the formation of new crystals in joints or urinary tract over time.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, stomach upset, drowsiness, headache, taste change, and mild rash. Serious warning signs include any spreading rash, peeling skin, mouth ulcers, fever, swollen glands, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue, or reduced urination. These require urgent medical review.

Important information

Allopurinol prevents gout over time; it does not treat acute gout pain immediately. Kidney function, liver function, blood counts, and uric acid may need monitoring. Important interactions include azathioprine, mercaptopurine, warfarin, thiazide diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and some antibiotics. Alcohol reduction, hydration, and diet changes may support uric-acid control but do not replace prescribed urate-lowering therapy.
