Gefitinib is a targeted EGFR inhibitor for selected non-small-cell lung cancers with sensitising EGFR mutations. Molecular testing, cancer stage and previous treatment determine whether it is appropriate.
How to use
Take the prescribed daily tablet consistently, with or without food. Acid-suppressing medicines and strong enzyme-inducing medicines can alter exposure; medication timing or alternatives should be arranged by the oncology team.
How it works
Gefitinib inhibits EGFR tyrosine kinase signalling, reducing proliferation signals in susceptible EGFR-driven tumour cells.
Side effects
Acne-like rash, diarrhoea, dry skin, nausea and raised liver enzymes can occur.
Important information
New breathlessness, cough or fever can indicate interstitial lung disease. Liver function and significant gastrointestinal or skin toxicity need ongoing review.

Does every lung cancer respond to gefitinib?
No. A suitable EGFR mutation is central to selecting treatment.
Can acid-reducing medicines reduce absorption?
Yes. Avoid proton-pump inhibitors where possible. If one is essential, the reference schedule separates gefitinib by 12 hours; H2 blockers and antacids are separated by six hours. The oncology team coordinates the full medicine schedule.
Is a rash proof that the cancer is responding?
No. Rash is a recognised adverse effect and does not replace imaging or tumour assessment.
What if diarrhoea becomes severe?
Contact the oncology team promptly to prevent dehydration and assess treatment interruption.
Why report new breathing symptoms urgently?
Drug-related lung inflammation can be serious and may resemble infection or cancer progression.
Can St John's wort be taken alongside it?
Avoid it because enzyme induction can reduce gefitinib exposure.
Can it be used during pregnancy?
It can harm fetal development; discuss contraception and pregnancy plans before treatment.
How is treatment response assessed?
Symptoms, imaging and the oncology monitoring plan are used rather than a fixed symptom-relief timetable.
