Acitretin 25mg is an oral retinoid used for severe psoriasis and selected disorders of skin keratinisation. It changes abnormal skin-cell growth rather than suppressing the immune system in the same way as biological psoriasis medicines.
How to use
Swallow the capsule with a main meal to improve absorption. Treatment response is assessed over weeks to months; do not add vitamin A supplements or another retinoid.
How it works
Acitretin acts on retinoid receptors that regulate skin-cell differentiation and proliferation, helping reduce excessive scaling and thickening.
Side effects
Dry lips, dry skin and eyes, peeling, hair thinning, raised blood lipids and abnormal liver tests can occur.
Important information
It causes severe birth defects. Pregnancy must be prevented during treatment and for three years after stopping; blood donation is also restricted for three years. Liver function and lipids need monitoring.

Is this the same as isotretinoin for acne?
No. Acitretin has different indications and a much longer pregnancy-prevention period.
Why must alcohol be avoided?
Alcohol can promote formation of long-lasting etretinate. Women who could become pregnant must avoid it during treatment and for two months afterwards.
Can I donate blood after stopping?
Donation is prohibited for three years because donated blood could expose a pregnant recipient.
How can dry lips be managed?
Use a bland lip balm and moisturiser; severe cracking or eye irritation warrants review.
Can tetracycline antibiotics be used alongside it?
Avoid this combination because retinoids and tetracyclines can increase intracranial-pressure risk.
Does it increase sun sensitivity?
Yes. Sun protection and review of ultraviolet treatment are important to limit burns.
What symptoms could indicate high pressure inside the skull?
A severe headache with vomiting or visual disturbance needs urgent assessment.
Can a higher dose clear psoriasis faster?
Increasing the dose also increases toxicity. Changes depend on skin response and laboratory results.
