Etodolac 400mg is an NSAID used to relieve pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and selected acute painful conditions. It reduces joint tenderness and stiffness but does not reverse the underlying arthritis.
How to use
Swallow the tablet with water, with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Keep the planned intervals between doses rather than adding an extra tablet for breakthrough pain. Treatment needs and kidney function should be reassessed during ongoing use.
How it works
Etodolac inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes and reduces prostaglandin synthesis. Lower prostaglandin activity reduces inflammatory pain and swelling.
Side effects
Indigestion, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea or dizziness may occur. Black stools, vomiting blood, reduced urine, chest pain or severe allergic swelling require urgent treatment.
Important information
Tell your doctor about previous ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney disease, heart failure, high blood pressure or NSAID-sensitive asthma. Anticoagulants, steroids and some antidepressants increase bleeding risk. Avoid adding ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac. Pregnancy requires particular caution, especially from 20 weeks onward.

Is etodolac a disease-modifying treatment for rheumatoid arthritis?
No. It can reduce pain and swelling, but does not replace a disease-modifying medicine such as methotrexate when one is needed to limit joint damage.
Does taking etodolac with food prevent stomach bleeding?
Food can reduce indigestion, but does not remove the risk of an ulcer or bleeding. Previous ulcer disease and concurrent blood thinners remain important.
Can etodolac affect blood pressure or swelling?
Yes. NSAIDs can cause sodium and fluid retention, worsen blood pressure and reduce the effect of some diuretics or blood-pressure medicines.
Can I use ordinary etodolac and extended-release etodolac together?
They contain the same active ingredient. Combining them can unintentionally increase total exposure; the release system and full daily treatment plan must be considered together.
What if etodolac makes me dizzy?
Avoid driving or operating machinery while dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision is present. Alcohol can make impairment and stomach-related adverse effects more likely.
