Clobetasol propionate 0.05% w/w + gentamicin 0.1% w/w cream combines a very potent topical corticosteroid with an antibiotic. It is used for selected inflamed skin conditions complicated by susceptible bacterial infection, rather than for an undiagnosed rash.
How to use
Apply a thin layer to the prescribed skin area after gently cleaning and drying it. Wash hands afterwards unless the hands are being treated. Avoid the eyes and do not cover with an airtight dressing unless the dermatologist specifically instructs this.
How it works
Clobetasol suppresses inflammatory signals in the skin. Gentamicin binds the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit and disrupts production of proteins needed by susceptible bacteria.
Side effects
Burning, stinging, dryness or local irritation can occur. Prolonged or extensive use can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, visible small blood vessels or systemic steroid effects.
Important information
Do not use it as a skin-lightening cream or for acne, rosacea, untreated fungal infection or viral skin lesions. Facial skin, skin folds and children's skin absorb potent steroids more readily. Tell your doctor about damaged skin, poor circulation and previous reactions to aminoglycoside antibiotics.

Will this cream treat ringworm?
No. Gentamicin is not an antifungal. The steroid can disguise or worsen fungal disease, making an apparent early improvement misleading.
Can I use it on my face for redness?
Facial redness has several causes, and a very potent steroid may worsen some of them. Do not start facial treatment without a specific dermatology prescription.
Is this suitable for a baby's nappy rash?
No routine use is appropriate. Thin infant skin and the occlusive effect of a nappy increase steroid absorption.
Why should treatment not be extended whenever itching returns?
Recurring itching may indicate a different diagnosis, persistent infection or steroid-related skin damage. Repeated courses need reassessment rather than automatic renewal.
Does the gentamicin protect against every skin infection?
No. It only acts on susceptible bacteria and does not cover fungi or viruses. Failure to improve may require a culture or a different treatment.
Can it be spread over a large body area?
That increases absorption and the risk of steroid effects beyond the skin. The prescriber should define the treatment area and duration.
Can it be mixed with a cosmetic moisturiser?
Do not mix products together in the container or hand without advice. A pharmacist can advise how to separate an emollient from the medicated application.
What if the rash spreads or develops pus during treatment?
Contact the treating clinician. Worsening infection or an incorrect diagnosis may need a change of treatment rather than more cream.
