Azathioprine 25mg Tablets

Azathioprine 25mg is an immunosuppressant used with other medicines to help prevent rejection of a transplanted organ. It is also used for rheumatoid arthritis and selected autoimmune conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, when longer-term immune control is needed. Its effect builds gradually rather than providing immediate symptom relief.
Swallow the tablet whole with water at a consistent time. It may be taken with or without food; keeping the relationship to meals consistent is helpful, and food can reduce nausea. Keep milk and dairy products away from the dose: avoid them during the hour before and the two hours after taking the tablet.
Azathioprine is converted to mercaptopurine and active thiopurine metabolites. These interfere with purine-dependent nucleic-acid synthesis and immune-cell activity, reducing the immune response responsible for transplant rejection and some autoimmune inflammation.
Nausea, reduced appetite, lower blood-cell counts, infections and abnormal liver tests can occur. Fever, a persistent sore throat, unusual bruising, jaundice or severe upper-abdominal pain need prompt assessment for infection, marrow suppression, liver injury or pancreatitis.
Full blood counts and liver tests are needed during treatment; normal TPMT or NUDT15 results do not replace these tests. Tell your doctor about kidney or liver disease, previous cancer and plans for pregnancy. Immunosuppression increases infection and some cancer risks, including skin cancer. Use sun protection and discuss live vaccines before receiving them.
Helps control immune-driven tissue injury and can reduce reliance on corticosteroids in some treatment plans. In transplant care it helps protect the donated organ from immune rejection.
Improvement commonly takes several weeks and can take a few months. Other medicines may be continued while the immunosuppressive effect develops; a lack of immediate relief is not a reason to increase the dose independently.
Reduced activity of these enzymes can allow active thiopurine metabolites to accumulate, increasing the risk of severe blood-cell suppression. The findings help determine whether a lower dose or an alternative treatment is needed.
Both can greatly increase thiopurine toxicity. Allopurinol combinations require a deliberately reduced azathioprine regimen with close blood monitoring, while febuxostat is generally avoided. Do not add either gout medicine without changing the treatment plan.
Stopping immunosuppression can allow rejection even when the transplanted organ has been working well. Any reduction is coordinated with the transplant team and the other medicines protecting the graft.
Contact the treatment team promptly if you have been exposed and are not known to be immune. Immunosuppression can make these infections more serious, and preventive treatment may be time-sensitive.
