Product Introduction

Sodium Bicarbonate 8.4% Injection is an intravenous alkalinising medicine used for selected cases of clinically significant metabolic acidosis and certain poisoning-treatment regimens. It helps correct excess acidity in monitored hospital care.

How to use

A trained clinician gives the injection intravenously. Blood-gas results, sodium, potassium, calcium, kidney function and fluid balance guide the amount, dilution and rate. The 8.4% solution is hypertonic, so the injection site and circulation are monitored for leakage or fluid overload.

How it works

Sodium bicarbonate supplies bicarbonate ions that buffer hydrogen ions, increasing systemic or urinary pH when alkalinization is clinically needed.

Side effects

Possible effects include vein irritation, fluid overload, swelling, high sodium, low potassium, low calcium symptoms, and alkalosis. Serious concerns include arrhythmia, tetany, seizures, tissue injury from extravasation, worsening CO2 burden, and severe fluid overload.

Important information

Tell the infusion team about kidney problems, heart failure, swelling, high blood pressure, breathing problems, vomiting, chloride depletion or diuretic use. Mention pregnancy and any risk of eclampsia. Blood-gas results, sodium, potassium and calcium levels, and compatibility with other infusions guide treatment.
