Oxymetazoline 0.05% w/v Nasal Spray

Oxymetazoline 0.05% w/v Nasal Spray is a nasal decongestant used for temporary relief of nasal blockage caused by colds or allergic rhinitis. It acts on swollen nasal tissue to make breathing through the nose easier.
Gently blow the nose before spraying. Keep the head upright, aim away from the nasal septum and inhale gently rather than sniffing forcefully. Use a short course, generally no longer than three days, to reduce rebound-congestion risk.
Oxymetazoline stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors and narrows blood vessels in the nasal lining. Reduced local swelling opens the nasal passages.
Dryness, burning, stinging and sneezing can occur. Excessive use may cause headache, palpitations or rebound nasal congestion.
The 0.05% strength is not an infant formulation. High blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma and thyroid overactivity require particular caution. MAO inhibitors and other decongestants can add to cardiovascular effects.
Provides temporary reduction in nasal swelling and blockage without requiring an oral decongestant.
Frequent or prolonged use can cause rebound swelling, so the nose becomes blocked again when the medicine wears off.
No. Oxymetazoline is a vasoconstrictor decongestant, not a corticosteroid or an antihistamine.
No. Saline provides moisture and cleansing, whereas oxymetazoline has an active blood-vessel-constricting effect.
Oral decongestants and some combination cold medicines can duplicate sympathomimetic effects and increase palpitations or blood pressure.
Persistent blockage may reflect allergy, sinus disease or rebound congestion and needs a cause-directed approach rather than extending the spray.
