Metronidazole 600mg ER tablet is an antimicrobial used for selected anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections. Indications can include certain dental, abdominal, pelvic or genital infections and amoebiasis or giardiasis, depending on the diagnosis and regimen.
How to use
Swallow the extended-release tablet intact with water; do not crush or chew it. Keep the planned treatment schedule and avoid alcohol and propylene glycol during treatment and for at least three days afterwards. Do not substitute an immediate-release tablet on a tablet-for-tablet basis.
How it works
Metronidazole is reduced inside susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, forming reactive compounds that damage DNA and inhibit organism growth.
Side effects
Possible effects include metallic taste, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness, dark urine, and yeast infection. Serious concerns include seizures, encephalopathy, peripheral neuropathy, severe allergic reaction, severe diarrhea, low blood counts, and liver problems.
Important information
Tell your doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, nerve or brain disease, seizures, Crohn's disease or a yeast infection. Mention alcohol, propylene glycol, warfarin, lithium, disulfiram, busulfan, phenytoin, phenobarbital and cimetidine.
