Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg is a thiazide diuretic used for hypertension and selected fluid-retention disorders. Its long-term blood-pressure benefit is distinct from the initial increase in urine output.
How to use
Take the oral dose in the morning where possible. Follow the agreed fluid and salt advice, and avoid self-adjusting doses in response to a single blood-pressure reading.
How it works
Inhibition of sodium-chloride reabsorption in the distal renal tubule increases salt excretion and contributes to reduced blood pressure.
Side effects
Dizziness, increased urination, low potassium or sodium, increased uric acid and photosensitivity may occur.
Important information
Monitor electrolytes, kidney function and glucose. Review gout, lithium and prior skin cancer; long-term exposure is associated with increased non-melanoma skin-cancer risk.
