Product Introduction

Dosulepin 25mg is a tricyclic antidepressant used for depressive illness, particularly when anxiety is also prominent. Treatment is selected according to the person's symptoms and previous response to antidepressants. It is not an immediate-relief medicine for an isolated episode of worry.

How to use

Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. A daily dose may be divided or taken at night when a sedating effect is expected. Changes are made gradually to assess tolerability; sudden stopping can cause nausea, headache, sleep disturbance and other withdrawal symptoms.

How it works

Dosulepin, also called dothiepin, inhibits reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin. Its effects on histamine, muscarinic and alpha-adrenergic receptors account for some of its sedating, dry-mouth and blood-pressure effects.

Side effects

Dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, sleepiness, postural dizziness, increased heart rate and weight gain can occur. Collapse, seizures, an irregular heartbeat or thoughts of self-harm need urgent help. Dosulepin is particularly dangerous in overdose.

Important information

Tell your doctor about a recent heart attack, heart block or other rhythm problems, severe liver disease, bipolar disorder, glaucoma, urinary retention and seizures. It must not be combined with an MAO inhibitor. Alcohol and other sedatives increase impairment. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require an individual treatment decision.
