Cefixime with ofloxacin is a dual-antibiotic treatment for selected susceptible bacterial infections when a clinician judges the combination appropriate. It should not be used indiscriminately for uncomplicated diarrhoea or viral illness.
How to use
Reconstitute the suspension only with the specified water volume, shake before each dose and measure with an oral syringe. The amount per 5mL and the patient's weight determine the dose; use the stated in-use storage and discard period.
How it works
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis; ofloxacin inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, interfering with bacterial DNA replication.
Side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, headache and dizziness may occur.
Important information
Tell your doctor about cephalosporin allergy, kidney disease, tendon problems, seizures and QT prolongation. Fluoroquinolones can cause serious tendon, nerve and neurological adverse effects.

Can it treat any episode of loose stools?
No. Many cases are viral or self-limiting; treatment depends on the cause.
What if tendon pain develops?
Stop the fluoroquinolone-containing treatment and contact the prescriber promptly; avoid stressing the painful tendon.
Can new tingling or burning be a side effect?
Yes. New nerve symptoms require prompt review because fluoroquinolone neuropathy can persist.
Can I use iron or zinc at the same time?
Leave at least two hours before or after iron, zinc, magnesium- or aluminium-containing antacids. These products can bind ofloxacin in the gut and reduce absorption.
Is the suspension automatically suitable for every child?
No. Age, weight and the justification for a fluoroquinolone must be assessed.
Why does kidney function affect the schedule?
Reduced renal clearance can increase exposure to either component.
Does early improvement mean the course can stop?
Follow the prescribed duration unless adverse effects prompt a clinician-directed change.
What if diarrhoea becomes severe or bloody?
Seek assessment for antibiotic-associated colitis instead of self-treating with antidiarrhoeals.
