Brimonidine tartrate eye drops lower intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Treatment can protect against pressure-related optic-nerve damage but does not restore vision already lost.
How to use
Instil the prescribed drops without touching the tip to the eye. Close the eye and press gently at the inner corner for about one minute. Leave at least five minutes between different eye medicines. Remove contact lenses before applying the drops.
How it works
Alpha-2 adrenergic receptor stimulation reduces aqueous-humour production and increases uveoscleral outflow.
Side effects
Eye redness, irritation, dry mouth, fatigue, drowsiness or allergic conjunctivitis can occur.
Important information
Brimonidine is contraindicated in infants under two years in major labels. Review MAO inhibitors, sedatives, low blood pressure and significant cardiovascular illness.

Why press the inner corner after a drop?
This can reduce drainage into the nose and systemic absorption.
Can I put contact lenses back immediately?
No. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the drops before reinserting contact lenses. This reduces exposure of the lenses to the preservative.
What if redness and itching appear after weeks of treatment?
Delayed allergic conjunctivitis can occur and should be assessed.
Is it suitable for a baby with red eyes?
No. Serious central nervous system and respiratory effects can occur in very young children.
Can it interact with antidepressants?
MAO inhibitors and some other antidepressants require particular review.
