Product Introduction

Benzathine Penicillin 2400000 IU is a long-acting injectable penicillin antibiotic. It is used for susceptible streptococcal infections, syphilis regimens, yaws, and prevention of rheumatic fever recurrence when recommended by clinical guidelines. Injection-site pain is common, and patients being treated for syphilis may experience a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction with fever, chills, aches, and symptom flare shortly after therapy.

How to use

Benzathine Penicillin 2400000 IU is given by a healthcare professional as a deep intramuscular injection, usually into a large muscle. It must not be self-administered or given by IV route. Observation may be needed after dosing in patients with allergy risk or when treating infections associated with reaction flares.

How it works

Benzathine penicillin G is slowly absorbed and converted to active penicillin G. Penicillin blocks bacterial cell-wall synthesis, causing susceptible bacteria to weaken and die.

Common side effects

Possible effects include injection-site pain, swelling, nausea, diarrhoea, rash, fever, and allergy symptoms. Serious concerns include anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, nerve or blood-vessel injury from incorrect injection, severe diarrhoea, and Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction during syphilis treatment.

Important information

Use only by deep IM route. Do not use if there is a serious penicillin allergy unless a specialist has assessed it. Tell the clinician about cephalosporin allergy, asthma, kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, anticoagulants, and prior severe antibiotic reactions.
