Amiodarone 200mg Tablets

Product Introduction

Amiodarone 200mg is an oral antiarrhythmic for selected significant heart-rhythm disturbances, including ventricular arrhythmias and some atrial arrhythmias. It helps maintain rhythm control during continuing treatment and has a prolonged effect because it accumulates in body tissues.

How to use

Take tablets consistently in relation to meals, at the same times each day. Treatment may begin with a loading phase followed by a smaller maintenance amount. Do not alter that schedule or stop regular treatment independently. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which can increase drug exposure.

How it works

Amiodarone prolongs the electrical recovery time of heart cells, mainly by blocking potassium channels. It also affects sodium and calcium channels and beta-adrenergic signalling, helping suppress abnormal electrical impulses.

Side effects

Nausea, altered taste, tremor, sun sensitivity and a slow pulse can occur. New persistent cough or breathlessness, jaundice, major vision changes, fainting or a markedly slow heartbeat need prompt assessment because lung, liver, eye or cardiac injury is possible.

Important information

Thyroid and liver blood tests and an ECG are checked before and during therapy; respiratory symptoms need particular attention. Warfarin and digoxin effects can increase, and other rhythm-slowing or QT-prolonging medicines can interact. Use sun protection. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require an early treatment review because fetal or infant thyroid effects are possible.
