Alfuzosin 10mg is an extended-release alpha-blocker used for difficulty passing urine, weak stream and other symptoms of benign prostate enlargement. Prolonged drug delivery supports continuing symptom control without directly shrinking the prostate.
How to use
Take the extended-release tablet immediately after the same meal each day. Swallow it whole; crushing, chewing or splitting disrupts its release system. Do not take it on an empty stomach, because food affects absorption.
How it works
Alfuzosin blocks alpha-1 receptors in the prostate and bladder outlet. Relaxing this smooth muscle reduces resistance to urine flow.
Side effects
Dizziness, headache, tiredness, nausea or abdominal discomfort may occur. Fainting, chest pain or a painful erection lasting more than four hours needs urgent care.
Important information
Tell your doctor about low blood pressure, liver disease, severe kidney impairment, QT-related rhythm problems or planned cataract surgery. Other alpha-blockers, nitrates and erectile-dysfunction medicines can worsen hypotension. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, including ketoconazole and ritonavir, can substantially increase alfuzosin exposure.

- Lower urinary-tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Benefits
Reduces outlet resistance so urination may become easier and the stream stronger. Symptom relief does not establish that a prostate enlargement is benign or remove the need to investigate persistent urinary symptoms.
Does alfuzosin shrink an enlarged prostate?
No. It relaxes muscle around the prostate and bladder neck. A 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor such as dutasteride has a different, prostate-shrinking action.
Why should my eye surgeon know about alfuzosin?
Alpha-blockers can affect the iris during cataract surgery. The surgeon needs the treatment history even if alfuzosin has already been stopped.
Can sildenafil or tadalafil increase dizziness?
Yes. Combining blood-vessel-relaxing medicines can cause a larger fall in blood pressure. The timing and suitability of the combination need specific assessment.
What if I cannot pass urine at all?
Complete inability to urinate, especially with lower abdominal pain, needs urgent assessment. Taking extra alfuzosin is not an emergency treatment for urinary retention.
