Acetylcysteine 1000mg/5mL Inhalation Solution

Acetylcysteine 1000mg/5mL Inhalation Solution is a 20% mucolytic used in respiratory conditions with thick, sticky mucus. It helps clear retained secretions in conditions such as bronchitis, emphysema, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis, alongside treatment of the underlying lung condition.
Inhale the solution through a nebulizer mouthpiece or face mask. If dilution is needed, 20% solution can be diluted with sterile saline or sterile water; use a freshly diluted solution within one hour. Clean the nebulizer after each treatment.
Acetylcysteine breaks disulfide bonds within mucus proteins. This reduces the thickness and stickiness of sputum, making it easier to move out of the airways.
Nausea, vomiting, mouth or throat irritation, a runny nose and fever may occur. Stop nebulization and seek urgent help for new wheezing, chest tightness, facial swelling or worsening breathing.
Thinning mucus can increase the amount of airway secretions. People with a weak cough may need assisted airway clearance or suction. Tell your doctor if you have asthma, previous bronchospasm or an allergy to acetylcysteine.
Supports clearance of retained sputum when coughing alone is not enough, and can complement chest physiotherapy and other airway-clearance measures.
The odor comes from the medicine itself and does not by itself mean it has deteriorated. It usually becomes less noticeable after treatment begins.
Do not combine it with another medicine in the nebulizer chamber unless compatibility of that specific mixture has been confirmed. Stability and safety have not been established for many combinations.
It thins mucus rather than quickly opening narrowed airways. It cannot replace a rescue bronchodilator for sudden breathlessness or wheezing.
Wash the skin under the mask with water after treatment. Acetylcysteine mist can leave a sticky residue around the face.
No. This presentation is intended for inhalation and is explicitly marked not for injection. Intravenous acetylcysteine uses a different preparation and administration protocol.
