Product Introduction
Leucovorin Calcium 15mg is a folinic acid medicine used in specific oncology and hematology settings. It is not the same as routine folic acid supplementation and should not be used casually to self-treat anemia or mouth ulcers without diagnosis. Timing is critical in methotrexate rescue because delayed or inadequate leucovorin can lead to serious toxicity, while excessive or mistimed use can interfere with methotrexate efficacy. When used with fluorouracil, gastrointestinal toxicity and bone marrow suppression can be more severe, especially in older or frail patients.
How to use
Take Leucovorin Calcium 15mg exactly on the schedule prescribed. Do not delay, skip, or change timing during methotrexate rescue. Keep required blood tests and oncology follow-up.
How it works
Leucovorin is reduced folate. It rescues normal cells from folate-antagonist toxicity and can also enhance fluorouracil binding to thymidylate synthase in some cancer regimens.
Common side effects
Possible effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, sleep disturbance, and allergic reactions. With fluorouracil, severe diarrhea, mouth sores, low blood counts, and dehydration can occur.
Important information
Review methotrexate schedule, kidney function, hydration, cancer regimen, fluorouracil use, seizure medicines, pregnancy, breastfeeding, anemia type, folate/B12 status, infection symptoms, diarrhea, and medication timing.
Uses
- Methotrexate rescue or folate-antagonist toxicity management
- Selected fluorouracil-based cancer regimens when prescribed.
Benefits
Protects normal cells during folate-antagonist exposure and supports specific chemotherapy protocols when timed correctly.
What is Leucovorin Calcium 15mg used for?
Leucovorin Calcium 15mg is used for methotrexate rescue, folate-antagonist toxicity, or selected chemotherapy regimens when prescribed.
Why is timing important?
In methotrexate rescue, timing affects both toxicity protection and treatment effectiveness.
Is it the same as folic acid?
No. Leucovorin is folinic acid, a reduced folate used for specific medical indications.
What tests may be needed?
Methotrexate levels, kidney function, blood counts, hydration status, and toxicity symptoms may be monitored.
When is urgent review needed?
Severe diarrhea, fever, mouth ulcers, dehydration, bleeding, or severe weakness need urgent review.
