Gentamicin 2mL (40mg/mL) Injection
SKU GME220
Product Introduction
Gentamicin 2mL (40mg/ml) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic injection used for serious susceptible bacterial infections for gentamicin treatment. It may be used for severe Gram-negative infections, bloodstream infection, urinary infection, abdominal infection, bone or joint infection, and as part of combination therapy for selected endocarditis or neonatal infections under specialist guidance. Gentamicin kills susceptible bacteria by disrupting bacterial protein synthesis.
How to use
Gentamicin 2mL (40mg/ml) is given by trained healthcare staff by the prescribed injection route. Do not self-use. Keep monitoring appointments for kidney tests, drug levels when ordered, and infection response.
How it works
Gentamicin binds bacterial ribosomes and causes faulty protein synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death in susceptible organisms.
Common side effects
Possible effects include injection-site pain, nausea, rash, fever, and changes in kidney tests. Serious warning signs include reduced urination, hearing loss, ringing in ears, dizziness/vertigo, balance problems, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or allergic reaction.
Important information
Tell the clinician about kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, myasthenia gravis, Parkinsonism, dehydration, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and use of loop diuretics, vancomycin, amphotericin, cisplatin, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, or other aminoglycosides.
Uses
Serious susceptible bacterial infections requiring injectable aminoglycoside therapy, often culture-guided or combination-guided.
Benefits
Provides potent bactericidal activity against selected serious infections, especially Gram-negative infections, when monitored carefully.
What is Gentamicin 2mL (40mg/ml) used for?
Gentamicin 2mL (40mg/ml) is used for serious susceptible bacterial infections for injectable gentamicin treatment.
Why are kidney tests needed?
Gentamicin can affect kidney function, so monitoring helps reduce toxicity risk.
Can Gentamicin 2mL (40mg/ml) affect hearing?
Yes. Hearing loss, ringing, dizziness, or balance problems can occur and may be serious.
Why are drug levels sometimes checked?
Blood levels help keep gentamicin high enough to work but low enough to reduce toxicity.
Can Gentamicin 2mL (40mg/ml) be used for viral infections?
No. Gentamicin treats susceptible bacterial infections only and does not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
