Gabapentin 100mg is an anticonvulsant and nerve-pain medicine used for neuropathic pain and as add-on treatment for certain partial seizures for gabapentin treatment. It may be prescribed for nerve pain after shingles, diabetic neuropathy, spinal cord injury-related pain, or other nerve-pain syndromes. Gabapentin does not work like an ordinary painkiller and may take time to build benefit. It can increase sedation and breathing-risk concerns when combined with opioids, alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives, or in people with respiratory disease. Mood changes or suicidal thoughts should be reported promptly.
How to use
Take Gabapentin 100mg as prescribed, at consistent times. Do not stop suddenly. Avoid alcohol and driving until you know its effect. Separate antacids containing aluminium or magnesium if advised because they may reduce absorption.
How it works
Gabapentin binds the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, reducing release of excitatory neurotransmitters involved in nerve pain and seizure activity.
Common side effects
Possible effects include sleepiness, dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision, unsteadiness, tremor, swelling, weight gain, dry mouth, and nausea. Serious warning signs include mood worsening, suicidal thoughts, severe drowsiness, breathing difficulty with sedatives/opioids, allergic swelling, or seizure worsening.
