Product Introduction
Rifaximin 400mg is an oral gut-selective rifamycin antibiotic used for hepatic encephalopathy and selected intestinal bacterial conditions for rifaximin treatment. Persistent watery or bloody diarrhea may suggest C. difficile-associated diarrhea and needs review.
How to use
Take Rifaximin 400mg exactly as prescribed for the specific indication. Complete the planned course or maintenance schedule and continue lactulose/liver-care medicines unless the prescriber changes them.
How it works
Rifaximin inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis in the gut, reducing susceptible intestinal bacteria and ammonia-producing bacterial activity.
Common side effects
Possible effects include nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, headache, dizziness, fatigue, swelling, and altered bowel habits. Serious concerns include C. difficile diarrhea, severe allergy, worsening liver symptoms, and persistent severe diarrhea.
Important information
Review indication, cirrhosis severity, hepatic encephalopathy history, lactulose plan, severe diarrhea, fever, blood in stool, pregnancy, breastfeeding, cyclosporine or other P-gp inhibitors, and antibiotic allergy history.
Uses
Hepatic encephalopathy recurrence reduction or selected intestinal bacterial conditions when rifaximin is prescribed.
Benefits
Acts mainly in the gut to reduce harmful bacterial activity, supporting hepatic encephalopathy management and selected intestinal indications.
What is Rifaximin 400mg used for?
Rifaximin 400mg is commonly used for hepatic encephalopathy and selected intestinal bacterial conditions when prescribed.
Does Rifaximin 400mg replace lactulose?
Usually no. Many hepatic encephalopathy plans use rifaximin with lactulose unless the prescriber changes the plan.
Why is it called gut-selective?
Rifaximin has low systemic absorption and acts mainly within the intestine.
When is urgent review needed?
Severe confusion, GI bleeding, fever, dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or worsening liver symptoms need urgent review.
Can antibiotic diarrhea occur?
Yes. Persistent watery or bloody diarrhea should be assessed for C. difficile and other causes.
