Product Introduction

Ampicillin 250mg + Dicloxacillin 250mg is an oral antibiotic combination used for susceptible bacterial infections where the prescriber wants coverage from ampicillin plus a penicillinase-resistant penicillin such as dicloxacillin. This can include selected skin, soft-tissue, respiratory, urinary, gastrointestinal, or mixed bacterial infections depending on local resistance patterns and culture results. It does not treat viral infections such as colds, flu, or most sore throats, and unnecessary use can increase antibiotic resistance. The full prescribed course should be completed even if symptoms improve early, because stopping too soon may leave bacteria behind and make future infections harder to treat.

How to use

Take Ampicillin 250mg + Dicloxacillin 250mg exactly as prescribed, at evenly spaced times. Penicillin capsules are often taken on an empty stomach with water unless the final label says otherwise. Complete the full course. Do not share leftover antibiotics or restart them for a later illness without diagnosis.

How it works

Ampicillin and dicloxacillin block bacterial cell-wall synthesis. Ampicillin broadens penicillin coverage, while dicloxacillin resists breakdown by many penicillinase-producing staphylococci. The combination works only when the infecting bacteria are susceptible.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, rash, itching, mouth irritation, black tongue, and yeast overgrowth. Serious warning signs include breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, blistering skin, persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea, jaundice, unusual bleeding, or severe allergic reaction.

Important information

Avoid use in known penicillin allergy unless a specialist confirms safety. Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea can occur during treatment or weeks later. Hormonal contraceptive reliability may be affected by vomiting or severe diarrhoea. Culture testing, allergy history, kidney/liver status, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and interacting medicines should be reviewed when clinically relevant.
