Product Introduction

Alendronic Acid (Sodium Alendronate) 35mg is an oral bisphosphonate medicine used for osteoporosis and selected bone-turnover disorders such as Paget's disease when prescribed. It helps reduce bone breakdown by inhibiting osteoclast activity, supporting improved bone density and lower fracture risk over time. The tablet is highly sensitive to how it is taken: food, tea, coffee, juice, milk, calcium, antacids, and many supplements can block absorption, while lying down too soon can irritate the oesophagus. For this reason, alendronic acid is usually taken first thing in the morning with plain water only, followed by remaining upright and waiting before food or other medicines. It is not a quick painkiller and does not give immediate symptom relief.

How to use

Take Alendronic Acid (Sodium Alendronate) 35mg exactly on the schedule prescribed. Take it after getting up in the morning with a full glass of plain water only. Do not take it with tea, coffee, juice, milk, mineral water, calcium, antacids, or supplements. Stay sitting or standing upright for at least 30 minutes and until after the first food of the day. Swallow whole; do not crush, chew, or suck the tablet.

How it works

Alendronic acid is a bisphosphonate. It binds to bone mineral and inhibits osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone resorption. By slowing bone breakdown, it helps bone density improve or stabilize and lowers fracture risk when used consistently with adequate calcium, vitamin D, and lifestyle measures.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include heartburn, indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, headache, muscle or joint pain, and oesophageal irritation. Serious concerns include chest pain, painful swallowing, new or worsening heartburn, jaw pain or dental problems, thigh or groin pain, severe bone pain, allergic reaction, low calcium symptoms, or eye inflammation.

Important information

Do not take alendronic acid if you cannot remain upright for at least 30 minutes or have certain oesophageal emptying problems unless a specialist advises otherwise. Correct low calcium before treatment. Dental check-ups are important, especially before invasive dental work. Use caution in kidney disease, swallowing difficulty, active upper-GI disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and poor vitamin D intake.
