Xylometazoline 0.1% w/v Nasal Drops is a topical nasal decongestant for short-term relief of a blocked nose associated with colds, rhinitis or sinus congestion. It reduces swelling inside the nose without treating the underlying infection or allergy.
How to use
Gently clear the nose, tilt the head back and place the drops into the nostril without touching the dropper to the skin. Keep the bottle for one person. Use only a short course; continued daily use beyond about a week can worsen congestion.
How it works
Xylometazoline stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors in nasal blood vessels. The vessels constrict, reducing mucosal swelling and improving nasal airflow.
Side effects
Temporary burning, dryness, irritation or sneezing can occur. Palpitations, marked headache or raised blood pressure are less common systemic effects. Overuse can cause rebound blockage.
Important information
The 0.1% formulation is not an infant preparation. Uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism and recent nasal surgery matter before use. MAO inhibitors and some antidepressants can increase cardiovascular effects.

Why can Xylometazoline 0.1% w/v make blockage worse after repeated use?
Prolonged vasoconstrictor use can produce rebound swelling when the effect wears off, leading to a cycle of frequent dosing.
Is it the same as a saline nasal spray?
No. Saline moistens and loosens secretions; xylometazoline actively constricts nasal blood vessels.
Can an adult drop be used for an infant?
No. Concentration and age suitability differ, and dosing errors in young children can cause serious systemic effects.
Does it cure sinus infection?
It can reduce blockage but does not eliminate a bacterial or viral infection.
Can I share the dropper?
Sharing can transfer nasal secretions and infection between users, even if the outside is wiped.
