Vasopressin injection is a vasopressor used in monitored care to support blood pressure in selected adults with vasodilatory shock despite fluid resuscitation and other vasopressor treatment.
How to use
For vasodilatory shock, the 20units/mL concentrate is diluted in normal saline or 5% dextrose and delivered by a controlled intravenous infusion. The team adjusts the rate to the blood-pressure response and monitors heart function, tissue perfusion, sodium and fluid balance. A 2mL container holds 40 units before dilution; it is not a single administered dose.
How it works
Activation of vascular V1 receptors produces vasoconstriction, while renal V2 effects increase water reabsorption.
Side effects
Reduced peripheral circulation, bradycardia and changes in sodium or fluid balance may occur; myocardial or mesenteric ischaemia is a serious risk.
Important information
Assess adequate circulating volume and cardiac function. Abrupt changes can affect haemodynamics; excessive water retention can cause hyponatraemia.

Does 20units/mL mean there are 20 units in a 2mL ampoule?
No. At 20 units per mL, a 2mL ampoule contains 40 units in total. Concentration and total ampoule content are different measurements.
Does it replace fluid resuscitation?
No. Circulating volume and the cause of shock still need treatment.
Why monitor fingers, toes and abdominal symptoms?
Excessive vasoconstriction can compromise tissue blood supply.
Can sodium fall during treatment?
Yes. Antidiuretic activity can retain water and lower sodium.
Is it the same as desmopressin?
No. Their receptor profiles and clinical roles differ.
Can it be used outside monitored care?
Shock treatment requires continuous clinical and haemodynamic supervision.
Does it treat the infection causing septic shock?
No. Source control and antimicrobial treatment remain separate.
Why is an infusion pump important?
Controlled delivery helps avoid rapid changes in vascular response.
