Potassium Citrate 1080mg (10mEq) ER Tablets

Potassium Citrate 1080mg (10mEq) is a urinary alkaliniser used for selected recurrent kidney-stone disorders, including hypocitraturic calcium oxalate stones and uric-acid stones. It can also be used for renal tubular acidosis associated with calcium stones.
Take the extended-release tablet with or shortly after a meal and a full glass of water. Swallow whole without crushing or chewing. Urine pH, urinary citrate, kidney function and blood potassium guide dose adjustment rather than tablet count alone.
Citrate is metabolised to bicarbonate, increasing urinary pH and citrate. Citrate binds calcium and reduces conditions that favour certain stone-forming crystals.
Nausea, abdominal discomfort, loose stools and vomiting may occur. Severe abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, marked muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat needs urgent assessment.
Impaired potassium excretion can cause dangerous hyperkalaemia. Significant kidney impairment, delayed gastric emptying or gastrointestinal obstruction can make extended-release potassium unsuitable. ACE inhibitors, ARBs and potassium-sparing diuretics can further raise potassium.
Changes urinary chemistry to reduce formation of certain recurrent stones when matched to the documented stone and urine profile.
No. These variants correspond to 5mEq or 10mEq of potassium citrate, equivalent to approximately 540mg or 1080mg respectively.
No. Stone composition and urine chemistry determine whether alkalinisation is helpful; excessive alkalinisation can be inappropriate for some stone patterns.
Some extended-release matrices remain visible after the potassium has been released; this does not necessarily mean the dose was missed.
They can add to the potassium load and increase hyperkalaemia risk.
Solid potassium preparations can rarely cause gastrointestinal injury, particularly when transit is delayed.
