Product Introduction

Pilocarpine 5mg is an oral cholinergic medicine used to improve dry mouth for pilocarpine treatment, especially after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer or in Sjogren's syndrome. It stimulates muscarinic receptors in salivary glands, so benefit depends on there being enough remaining gland function to respond. The aim is to make speaking, chewing, swallowing, oral comfort, and dental protection easier, but it does not treat the underlying autoimmune disease or radiation injury itself. It can increase sweating, tears, nasal secretions, urination, and gastrointestinal activity. Dental care, hydration, sugar-free saliva support, and fluoride measures may still be needed because dry mouth increases tooth-decay risk.

How to use

Take Pilocarpine 5mg as prescribed, usually with water and according to the dosing schedule. Maintain oral hygiene and dental follow-up. Avoid overheating if sweating is troublesome.

How it works

Pilocarpine stimulates muscarinic receptors, increasing saliva production from responsive salivary glands.

Common side effects

Possible effects include sweating, flushing, nausea, chills, runny nose, dizziness, headache, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and increased urination. Serious concerns include breathing difficulty, fainting, slow or irregular heartbeat, eye pain, and severe dehydration.

Review asthma/COPD, narrow-angle glaucoma, heart disease, low blood pressure, kidney stones, gallbladder disease, liver disease, dehydration, pregnancy, breastfeeding, anticholinergics, cholinergics, and beta-blockers.
