Nitazoxanide 500mg is an antiprotozoal used for diarrhoea caused by susceptible Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum in the appropriate patient population. It does not treat every cause of diarrhoea.
How to use
Take oral tablets with food to improve absorption. The regimen depends on age and diagnosis; tablets should not be substituted for paediatric suspension without checking age suitability and dose.
How it works
Interference with pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase-dependent energy metabolism inhibits susceptible protozoal organisms.
Side effects
Abdominal pain, nausea, headache or urine discolouration may occur.
Important information
Maintain hydration and investigate bloody diarrhoea, severe dehydration or persistent fever. Efficacy for cryptosporidiosis is not established in immunodeficient patients; review highly protein-bound medicines such as warfarin.

No. The 500mg tablet reference is for adults and adolescents aged 12 or older. Younger children require an age-appropriate suspension regimen rather than part of an adult tablet dose.
What if diarrhoea continues after treatment?
Reassess the diagnosis, hydration and possibility of reinfection or another cause.
Does it reliably treat cryptosporidiosis in advanced immunodeficiency?
Its effectiveness is not established in that population; specialist management is needed.
Can warfarin need extra monitoring?
Yes. Potential interaction and changes during illness justify review.
