Nintedanib is an antifibrotic tyrosine-kinase inhibitor used for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and selected progressive fibrosing interstitial lung diseases. It slows decline in lung function rather than reversing established scarring.
How to use
Take capsules intact with food, using the prescribed approximately 12-hour spacing when twice-daily treatment is selected. Do not open or crush them. Manage diarrhoea promptly using the clinic's hydration and antidiarrhoeal plan.
How it works
Inhibition of growth-factor receptor kinases involved in fibroblast activity reduces processes contributing to fibrotic lung remodelling.
Side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, weight loss and raised liver enzymes can occur.
Important information
Liver tests are needed before and during therapy. Bleeding risk, anticoagulants, gastrointestinal perforation risk and pregnancy require particular assessment.

Benefits
Can slow lung-function decline in eligible fibrosing lung disease; it is not an immediate breathlessness reliever.
Will it remove existing lung scars?
No. Its role is to slow progression rather than restore all damaged lung tissue.
What should I do when diarrhoea begins?
Start the agreed supportive plan and contact the clinic if it persists or causes dehydration.
Can a missed capsule be doubled?
No. Resume the next scheduled dose rather than taking two together.
Does it replace oxygen therapy?
No. Oxygen and pulmonary rehabilitation may still be needed according to lung function.
Why should blood thinners be disclosed?
Nintedanib can increase bleeding risk and the combined regimen needs assessment.
Which liver symptoms need reporting?
Dark urine, jaundice, loss of appetite or persistent nausea warrants prompt review.
Is it simply an interchangeable cancer medicine?
No. Oncology and lung-fibrosis indications, dose schedules and formulations differ and cannot be exchanged automatically.
How is benefit followed over time?
