Levofloxacin with ornidazole combines antibacterial and antiprotozoal actions for selected infectious diarrhoea or dysentery when both components are appropriate. Oral rehydration remains essential and many diarrhoeal illnesses do not require this combination.
How to use
Take the tablet with food and water to reduce stomach upset. Separate levofloxacin from iron, zinc and antacids by at least two hours. Avoid alcohol during ornidazole treatment and for at least three days after finishing it.
How it works
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA-processing enzymes; ornidazole forms reduced metabolites that damage DNA in susceptible anaerobes and protozoa.
Side effects
Nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, altered taste and dizziness can occur.
Important information
Tendon or nerve symptoms, seizures, QT problems, kidney disease and severe dehydration require particular attention. Bloody stools or persistent fever needs diagnosis, not repeated empirical courses.

Can I drink alcohol during the course?
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least three days after the last dose. Alcohol can worsen dizziness and stomach-related adverse effects.
What if a tendon becomes painful?
Stop the fluoroquinolone-containing medicine and contact the prescriber promptly.
Can iron tablets affect treatment?
Yes. They can bind levofloxacin and reduce absorption.
Can it be used repeatedly for irritable bowel syndrome?
No. IBS is not treated by routine antibacterial-antiprotozoal courses.
When does dehydration need urgent care?
Little urine, marked lethargy, fainting or inability to retain fluids requires prompt assessment.
