Flupirtine Maleate 100mg Capsules are a non-opioid pain-relief treatment used for acute pain when other pain-relief options are unsuitable. They are not a continuing treatment for chronic pain.
How to use
Swallow the capsule with water. Treatment is short term, not a continuing treatment for recurrent or chronic pain. Do not extend or restart a course because symptoms persist. Liver-function monitoring is needed during exposure.
How it works
Flupirtine promotes neuronal potassium-channel opening, reducing excitability in pain-processing pathways.
Side effects
Dizziness, tiredness, nausea and abdominal discomfort may occur; clinically significant liver injury is the major safety concern.
Important information
Existing liver disease, alcohol misuse and interacting liver-toxic medicines can make treatment unsuitable. Jaundice, dark urine, persistent nausea or unusual fatigue requires stopping treatment and urgent assessment.

Can reduce acute pain when other pain-relief options are unsuitable. It does not treat the underlying cause of an injury or provide the anti-inflammatory action of an NSAID.
Can normal liver blood tests rule out liver injury during treatment?
No. Flupirtine-related liver injury can be unpredictable and can develop after earlier normal results. Monitoring does not eliminate the risk.
Why are liver blood tests important?
Liver injury can develop during treatment and may initially have few symptoms.
Can it be used for long-term pain?
Prolonged use increases concern and should not be assumed appropriate.
Can alcohol be taken during treatment?
Avoid it because of liver toxicity and impaired alertness.
What symptoms suggest liver injury?
Yellow eyes, dark urine, loss of appetite or persistent nausea need urgent review.
Does it work like an anti-inflammatory NSAID?
No. Its principal analgesic action differs from cyclo-oxygenase inhibition.
Can I drive if I feel dizzy?
No. Dizziness or tiredness can impair safe driving.
Can another painkiller be added?
Do not add paracetamol-containing remedies or another potentially liver-toxic medicine without a coordinated treatment plan. Overlapping products can increase liver risk.
