Famciclovir 250mg Tablets

Famciclovir 250mg is an antiviral medicine used for shingles and selected herpes simplex infections, including genital herpes and cold sores. It can also be used in a planned suppressive regimen for recurrent genital herpes.
Swallow with water, with or without food. Episodic treatment works best when started promptly at the first tingling, burning or rash. Dose and course length differ between shingles, a first herpes episode, recurrence and long-term suppression; kidney impairment requires adjustment.
The body converts famciclovir to penciclovir. Its active form inhibits viral DNA polymerase in infected cells, limiting replication of susceptible herpes viruses.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea or dizziness may occur. Confusion, marked drowsiness or reduced urine can indicate serious adverse effects, especially with impaired kidney function. Severe rash or facial swelling requires urgent treatment.
Tell your doctor about kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding or medicines affecting kidney function. Herpes can still be transmitted during treatment. New eye pain or visual symptoms with facial shingles needs urgent assessment.
Can shorten an outbreak and reduce lesion-related pain and discomfort when started early. Suppressive treatment can reduce recurrences, but does not eliminate latent herpes virus.
No. Herpes viruses can remain dormant in nerve tissue after an outbreak settles. Antiviral treatment controls viral replication but does not remove that latent infection.
Yes. Transmission can occur even when no sores are visible. Avoid sexual contact during sores or warning symptoms; barrier protection reduces but does not eliminate risk.
No. These conditions use different dose and duration regimens. Tablet strength alone is not enough to determine the treatment schedule.
Eye-area shingles can threaten sight. Eye redness, pain, light sensitivity or blurred vision needs urgent eye assessment, even if oral antiviral treatment has already started.
Its active metabolite is cleared mainly through the kidneys. Reduced clearance can increase exposure and the likelihood of neurologic or kidney-related adverse effects.
