Erythromycin 250mg is a macrolide antibiotic used for susceptible bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, throat, ear and skin. The choice of treatment depends on the likely bacteria and their sensitivity to erythromycin. It does not treat viral colds or influenza.
How to use
Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Space doses evenly through the day according to the infection-specific schedule and complete the planned course. Do not crush or chew the tablet or double the next dose after a missed dose.
How it works
Erythromycin binds to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and interferes with protein production. Susceptible bacteria then cannot grow and multiply normally.
Side effects
Stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are common. Severe watery or bloody diarrhoea, jaundice, an irregular heartbeat, hearing changes, or swelling with breathing difficulty require prompt medical attention.
Important information
Tell your doctor about liver disease, prolonged QT interval, low potassium or magnesium, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Erythromycin has major interactions with several heart-rhythm medicines, simvastatin, lovastatin, colchicine and ergot medicines. Its interaction with other medicines can be important even during a short course.

How soon should an infection improve with Erythromycin 250mg?
Improvement often begins within a few days. Worsening symptoms or no improvement during treatment may indicate resistant bacteria, a different diagnosis or a complication, rather than a need for extra tablets.
Why can erythromycin cause abdominal cramps?
Besides its antibiotic effect, erythromycin stimulates motilin receptors that increase gut movement. This can produce cramps or nausea, particularly with higher doses.
Can erythromycin be taken with a cholesterol medicine?
The exact cholesterol medicine matters. Erythromycin can greatly increase exposure to simvastatin and lovastatin, raising the risk of muscle injury; the combination needs to be changed before treatment starts.
Can diarrhoea occur after the erythromycin course has finished?
Yes. Antibiotic-associated bowel infection can appear during treatment or weeks later. Persistent watery diarrhoea, blood in stools or fever needs assessment rather than self-treatment with an antidiarrhoeal.
