Ebastine 20mg Tablets

Ebastine 20mg is an antihistamine used for allergic rhinitis and allergy-related itching or hives. It is suited to symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose and watery eyes triggered by allergens. It does not treat the underlying infection when similar nasal symptoms are caused by a virus.
Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food, usually once daily. Keep a consistent daily time during periods when regular allergy control is needed. A 20mg tablet provides a different dose from a 10mg tablet; additional antihistamines should not be added to intensify the effect.
Ebastine is converted to its active metabolite, carebastine. It blocks peripheral H1 histamine receptors, reducing the effects of histamine released during an allergic reaction.
Headache, dry mouth, nausea and occasional drowsiness can occur. Palpitations, fainting or swelling of the lips or throat with breathing difficulty require urgent attention.
Tell your doctor about severe liver disease, heart-rhythm problems, low potassium, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Erythromycin, ketoconazole and itraconazole can increase ebastine exposure. Avoid driving if sleepy and avoid alcohol if it worsens this effect. Antihistamines can suppress allergy skin-test responses.
Reduced nasal irritation, eye watering and itch can improve comfort during allergen exposure. The relatively long action supports symptom control across the day without the marked sedation associated with some older antihistamines, although drowsiness remains possible.
Its strongest effects are on sneezing, itching and a runny nose. Persistent nasal blockage may respond better to a treatment directed at nasal inflammation, rather than to increasing the antihistamine dose.
It is not a substitute for adrenaline in anaphylaxis. Breathing difficulty, throat swelling or collapse requires emergency treatment.
It can make a skin test falsely negative by blocking the histamine response. The testing team will specify how long it needs to be withheld before the appointment.
A higher dose may be chosen for more troublesome symptoms, but liver function, interactions and tolerability affect that decision. Tablets of different strengths are not automatically interchangeable tablet for tablet.
