Doxepin 10mg is a tricyclic antidepressant used for depression, including depression accompanied by anxiety. These oral capsules belong to the antidepressant-dose range and are not equivalent to the low-dose doxepin tablets used specifically for sleep-maintenance insomnia.
How to use
Swallow the capsule with water, with or without food. Treatment may use divided doses or a single evening dose because doxepin can be sedating. Maintain the selected schedule rather than taking additional capsules in response to a single bad night or anxious period.
How it works
Doxepin reduces reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin, increasing their availability in nerve pathways involved in mood. Its histamine- and muscarinic-receptor effects contribute to sedation and anticholinergic adverse effects.
Side effects
Drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness and weight gain can occur. An abnormal heartbeat, collapse, seizures, severe confusion or suicidal thoughts requires urgent help. Excess doses can be life-threatening.
Important information
Tell your doctor about glaucoma, difficulty emptying the bladder, heart disease, bipolar disorder, seizures, pregnancy and breastfeeding. MAO inhibitors cannot be combined with doxepin. Alcohol, opioids and sedating antihistamines can intensify impaired alertness. Older adults are particularly susceptible to confusion, constipation and falls.

Benefits
A sustained antidepressant response may improve persistent sadness, anxiety and the ability to manage daily activities. Sedation can occur earlier than the mood benefit; feeling sleepy is not by itself evidence that the depression is responding.
Are these capsules the same as low-dose doxepin for insomnia?
No. The antidepressant capsule strengths differ from the 3mg or 6mg sleep-maintenance tablets. Their dose schedules and benefit-risk considerations are not interchangeable.
When does Doxepin 10mg start improving mood?
A mood response usually develops over several weeks. Dry mouth or sleepiness can appear much sooner, so early effects should not be mistaken for the full antidepressant response.
Can I stop doxepin suddenly if it makes me sleepy?
Abrupt withdrawal can cause nausea, headache and malaise. Persistent sedation is a reason to discuss dose timing or a gradual treatment change, rather than stopping and restarting repeatedly.
What can help a dry mouth caused by doxepin?
Small sips of water and sugar-free gum may help. Persistent dryness also merits attention to oral hygiene because prolonged dry mouth increases dental problems.
