Product Introduction

Donepezil 10mg is used to manage cognitive and functional symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. It can support memory, attention and the ability to carry out daily activities in some people with dementia. It is a symptomatic treatment, not a cure or a medicine proven to stop the underlying disease process.

How to use

Swallow the tablet with water once daily, usually in the evening before bed, with or without food. Treatment commonly begins at 5mg, with at least four to six weeks before an increase to 10mg is considered. A caregiver can help maintain consistent daily administration.

How it works

Donepezil inhibits acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. This increases availability of the messenger in brain pathways important for memory and other cognitive functions.

Side effects

Nausea, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, weight loss, muscle cramps, insomnia and vivid dreams can occur. Fainting, an unusually slow heartbeat, black stools, vomiting blood or seizures needs urgent assessment.

Important information

Tell your doctor about heart block, a slow pulse, unexplained fainting, peptic ulcers, asthma or COPD, seizures and urinary obstruction. Medicines that slow the heart and NSAIDs need particular attention. Weight and appetite should be followed during treatment. Tell the anaesthetist about donepezil before surgery.
