Dexmedetomidine 50mcg/0.5mL Injection is an alpha-2 adrenergic sedative used for selected intensive-care or procedural sedation. Sedation can resemble sleep with some arousability, but continuous clinical monitoring remains essential.
How to use
Administer by a controlled intravenous infusion with the dilution appropriate to the supplied formulation. A trained team adjusts the rate to sedation and haemodynamic response; rapid bolus administration is inappropriate.
How it works
Alpha-2 receptor activation in the central nervous system reduces noradrenaline release and sympathetic activity, producing sedation and some analgesic-sparing effects.
Side effects
Bradycardia, low blood pressure, dry mouth and occasionally transient hypertension may occur.
Important information
Conduction disease, reduced circulating volume and other sedatives can increase risk. Monitor breathing, circulation and sedation depth; prolonged treatment can produce withdrawal symptoms on abrupt cessation.

Can a patient still wake when spoken to?
Some arousability is characteristic and does not necessarily mean sedation has failed.

Why can the heart rate become slow?
Reduced sympathetic activity can cause clinically significant bradycardia.
Can it be mixed without checking concentration?
No. Concentrated and ready-to-use preparations have different dilution requirements.
Does it provide complete surgical anaesthesia alone?
Not generally. Anaesthesia and analgesia needs depend on the procedure.
Can blood pressure rise briefly at the start?
Transient hypertension can occur, particularly with rapid or loading administration.
Can it interact with other sedatives?
Yes. Sedative and haemodynamic effects can be additive.
What if a long infusion is stopped suddenly?
Agitation, tachycardia or hypertension may occur; discontinuation should be planned.
