Dexchlorpheniramine 2mg Tablets

Dexchlorpheniramine 2mg is a first-generation antihistamine used to relieve allergic rhinitis, watery or itchy eyes and uncomplicated allergic skin symptoms such as hives. It can cause more sedation and anticholinergic effects than newer antihistamines. It does not replace emergency treatment for a severe allergic reaction.
Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. Conventional tablets are usually taken at intervals through the day rather than treated as a once-daily extended-release product. Do not use the adult tablet schedule for a child or add another sedating cold-and-allergy medicine.
Dexchlorpheniramine competes with histamine at H1 receptors, reducing histamine-mediated itching, sneezing and watering. It also enters the brain and has anticholinergic activity, contributing to sedation and dryness.
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation and difficulty passing urine may occur. Children and older adults can occasionally develop excitation or confusion instead of sedation. Severe allergy or marked breathing difficulty requires urgent help.
Avoid alcohol and driving if alertness is impaired; next-day drowsiness is possible. Tell your doctor about narrow-angle glaucoma, prostate enlargement, urinary retention, bowel obstruction, seizures, pregnancy and breastfeeding. MAO inhibitors and other sedatives can interact. Older adults are more vulnerable to falls and anticholinergic effects.
Blocking histamine can reduce itch, repeated sneezing and eye or nasal watering during an allergy episode. The useful symptom relief must be balanced against reduced daytime alertness.
They are related, but dexchlorpheniramine is the active dextrorotatory isomer. Their milligram doses are not interchangeable without adjustment.
Sleepiness is an adverse effect, not a reason to use it as a long-term insomnia treatment. Repeated sedating-antihistamine use can cause tolerance and troublesome anticholinergic effects.
First-generation antihistamines can occasionally produce paradoxical excitation rather than sleepiness. An adult dose should never be used to try to settle a child.
It cannot reliably reverse airway swelling or shock. Adrenaline and emergency care are the key treatment; an oral antihistamine must not delay them.
First-generation antihistamine: an older H1 blocker that readily enters the brain. Anticholinergic: an effect that can cause dry mouth and urinary difficulty. Urticaria: raised, itchy skin welts.
