Product Introduction

Deflazacort 6mg is an oral corticosteroid used for steroid-responsive inflammatory and immune-mediated conditions. It also has a role in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, where treatment can help preserve muscle function. The strength chosen reflects the condition, treatment phase and individual response, not a different active ingredient.

How to use

Take the tablet with water at a consistent time. It can be taken with or without food; breakfast may reduce stomach discomfort when a once-daily morning regimen is used. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Longer courses can require a stepwise reduction rather than an abrupt stop.

How it works

Deflazacort is converted to an active glucocorticoid metabolite. Activation of glucocorticoid receptors changes inflammatory and immune-related gene expression, reducing inflammatory mediator activity.

Side effects

Increased appetite, weight gain, indigestion, sleep disturbance, mood changes and raised blood glucose may occur. Prolonged use can cause bone loss, cataracts, adrenal suppression and greater susceptibility to infection. Severe infection, gastrointestinal bleeding or major psychiatric symptoms needs urgent attention.

Important information

Tell your doctor about diabetes, hypertension, tuberculosis or other infections, ulcers, glaucoma, osteoporosis, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Live vaccines and medicines such as clarithromycin, azole antifungals and rifampicin need particular attention. During ongoing treatment, blood pressure, glucose, bone health and growth in children may need monitoring.
